Broeder Dieleman: Alternative folk splendor from Zeelandic Flanders to Kentucky
BRDCST is AB’s brand new indoor spring festival, one whereby we focus on musical limitlessness. The name is a direct reference to the retro futuristic electronica-pop of English band Broadcast, which released inspiring albums like ‘Haha Sound’ and ‘Noise Made By The People’ over the past decade. Artists who feel strongly about musical innovation will form the focal point for BRDCST.
JOAN SHELLEY (us.)
The evening will be rounded off by Louisville, Kentucky, resident Joan Shelley. Shelley’s work is strongly influenced by the West Coast folk scene of the late ’60s. Her songs and guitar style are witness to an exceptional craftsmanship, something that has translated itself into a number of superb albums that have been, very rightly, inundated with praise. This is perfectly suited to fans of Townes Van Zandt, Alela Diane, Emmylou Harris or Father John Misty.
She recorded her recently released 3rd album ‘Over And Even’ (7,8 from Pitchfork, 9/10 in Uncut, album of the week at Stereogum,….) with Nathan Salsburg, who will also accompany her live. Salsburg is the man who has been managing the Alan Lomax archive for a number of years now.
To complete the circle: Joan Shelley sings backing vocals on 'Gloria' (the flip side of the split 7” mentioned below) that was written by Broeder Dieleman and recorded by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy.
