In autumn 2009, the AB will be organising a tribute to the American ethno-musicologist Alan Lomax (1915-2002). It is thanks to his pioneering work that anyone can now acquaint themselves with the earliest folk-song recordings. Together with his father, he was responsible for the discovery of blues legend Lead Belly and folk icon Woody Guthrie. Lomax was later the most important staff member of the Archive of Folk Song or to the Library of Congress in Washington.
1959 – 2009: Alan Lomax’ legendary journey of musical discovery through the Southern part of the United States, at the side of young British folk singer Shirley Collins, took place a half century ago. A fine reason for the AB to dedicate a number of events to the work of this intriguing man. Not only extensive concert serie in your familiar concert hall but also a photo exhibition in the MiM (Musical Instrument Museum) and a retrospective in Cinematek (the Royal Belgian Film Archive). Because Alan Lomax was not only a ‘songhunter’ but also a fine photographer who registered all his recordings on film. He also made five documentaries between 1978 and 1985, which will be shown in Cinematek together with a series of related films.
