DOMINO # 13: !AND THE 'PERIPHERAL HAPPENINGS'!

Domino # 13: overview
Domino # 13: a musical guide

No Domino without pre-listening sessions. No Domino without book/CD shop. No Domino without an exhibition from a graphic designer. And no Domino without (inter)national DJs. Basically: the perfect extras to treat the extra-value visitor and give the Domino visitor even more explanation.

1. EXHIBITION: TYPE RECORDS AS PRESENTED BY JOHN TWELLS

[EVERY DAY FROM 7:00 PM!]

England's Type Records was established in 2003 by two like-minded souls, Stefan Lewandowski and John Twells. Stefan is a well-known graphic designer who operates under the motto: ’create something every day’. Aside from being a label-owner, John Twells is also a musician who operates under the moniker XELA. Type Records specialises in qualitative experimental, often electronic, music and has meanwhile released about forty albums from sixteen artists, including Khonnor (now the most successful Type-album), Sanso-Xtro, Julien Neto, Midaircondo from Sweden, Goldmund, Deaf Center from Norway (our absolute favourite!), Mokira (the alter-ego of Swede Andreas Tilliander), the Swedish post-rock of Sickoakes and of course Xela himself.

Aside from the regular album releases, Type records has also launched – note the spelling! - the T7PE Series, a series of limited edition 7 inches which includes releases from like-minded Type-artists such as Machinefabriek or Paavoharju. These almost only appear in a cover recognizable by the red/white checked design. Lastly there is the TYEP Series with ‘shorter musical expressions’, usually EP’s.

Specialised music site Boomkat asked John Twells how important artwork was for the label: "The artwork is really important, that was something we made sure of from very early on. I did however always say that each release had to have it's own personality, I didn't want a style so uniform that the releases would necessarily look like a 'set'. We've certainly set a certain mood across all of our releases to a degree. All I want is for the records to look really great, really high quality so that people will actually enjoy buying them and taking them home. I know what I want when I buy a record (which is very frequently, I am an addict) and I try to replicate that somewhat."

During the expo TYPE RECORDS AS PRESENTED BY JOHN TWELLS – also the first Type Records expo ever – you can view the bulk of the catalogue on vinyl, at the same time the T7PE Series releases and also the TYEP Series. The most important part of the exhibition will be enlargements of the Type record covers, supplemented by images and John Twells' especially compiled/created soundtrack.

To get into the mood completely: take a visit to www.typerecords.com and just check out Type-radio, and dive into the wonderful world of Type Records and associated artists.

2. SOUNDTRACK BY…

[EVERY DAY FROM 7:00 PM!]

Vinyl Knights on duty to create fine soundscapes in-between the performances. Something for the spotters amongst us. The Vinyl Knights could be (inter)national record bosses, radio people, festival promoters or our yearly guests from The Wire magazine.

3. BOOKS FEED YOUR HEAD

 [EVERY DAY FROM 7:00 PM!]

A bookshop customized to you. An immersion in ‘anti-culture’.

4. PRE-LISTENING SESSIONS

[ONLY FOR CONCERTS IN THE MAIN HALL]

During DOMINO, you can get a taste of albums that haven't yet made it into the racks, every day in the FOYER (space to the left of the main AB stage). In previous editions you heard albums from BON IVER, MARK LANEGAN & ISOBEL CAMPBELL, JAMIE LIDELL, JOAN AS A POLICE WOMAN,…
