The Sonics are pretty much the forefathers of garage-rock. Established in the mid '60's in Tacoma, Washington, this foursome are held personally responsible for the increasing popularity of that raw garage sound among the cool teenagers of the '60's, doing so with themes like surf, cars, guitars and … girls. Their raw sound also provided them with the official title of first punk band ever. They wrote masterpieces like ‘Strychnine’, ‘Psycho’ and ‘The Witch’ and have been honoured ever since by hundreds of musicians, including Eagles Of Death Metal, The White Stripes, The Hives and The Fuzztones. They became active again in 2007 and in the following year they filled the bills of honourable festivals like Primavera Barcelona and the Sjock festival in Gierle.

Nothing more fun than to test out The Sonics this same Sunday against 2 modern, young, unpretentious garage- & soul-bands. We kick off with Chain & The Gang or the band encompassing ex-Weird War, ex-Make Up and ex-Nation Of Ulysses singer Ian Svenonius. His raw, honest soul-sound can be heard on the new album ‘Music’s Not For Everyone’ that has just been released on K Records and is now a favourite on the VPRO 3voor12 Luisterpaal.

Afterwards it'll be slightly more psychedelic with Thee Oh Sees. Post-nostalgia, post-garage, that's where you'll find the latest incarnation of this quartet encompassing John Dwyer that further consists of Brigid Dawson, Petey Dammit and Mike Shoun. Their most recent ‘Warm Slime’ was released on the In The Red label and predecessor ‘The Master's Bedroom is Worth Spending a Night In’ from 2008 was partly produced by TV On The Radio’s Dave Sitek. ‘Tunes only a soulless vampire couldn't enjoy’.
