British pop/wave that operates at the meeting place of melodies and feedback.

British combo The Horrors resolutely opted for a grand sound with ‘Skying’ (in stores as of July 11). In a recent interview, frontman Faris Badwan spoke of ‘easily the most melodic record we’ve ever made’. But then ‘Skying’ is an addictive trip that will effortlessly keep you sweet all summer during those long nocturnal drives. This third album was recorded in their own studio in London without any external assistance. So we hereby take our hats off to Badwan and his 4 companions.
Things just got better and better for this band after ‘Primary Colours’ (2009), which was well-received everywhere. They called upon the likes of Geoff Barrow from Portishead and director Chris Cunnigham as producers at the time. That resulted in a sound that strongly referred to bands like Joy Division and Suicide (whose ‘Shadazz’ they also released as a single).
You could see Faris Badwan at work recently in the ABClub where he gave a brilliant concert with his Cat’s Eyes side-project.

Cerebral Ballzy is a rock solid punk band from Brooklyn, New York that has listened to a lot of ‘80s punk bands like Minor Threat, Bad Brains and Black Flag. Nothing new, but a debut album that delivers 12 fun-filled songs in under 20 minutes.

Zag hen verleden jaar in Koninklijk Circus en was onder de in druk maar het stomende en uitdagende van de leadzanger heb ik in de AB niet teruggevonden. Ze stopten ook na 40 min en dan hun bisnummers dus het optreden was heel kort! En soms veel te lange weinig opwindende gitaarsolo's. Hopelijk hernemen ze zich!

Concert was behoorlijk, maar heeft me niet weggeblazen, en dat had ik dan weer wél verwacht. "Primary Colours" en "Skying" zijn uitstekende albums, waar ik zeer graag naar teruggrijp. Wat vond ik jammer: het excessief gebruik van de reverb op de zang, het in het eerste stuk veel porties noise, en bijna niet te verstane zang. Maarrr, bij momenten kwam het allemaal wél door, en ik had de indruk dat het vooral de "Primary Colours" tracks waren die goed in de vingers zaten, want dat was heel strak. Laatste nummer was inderdaad eentje om mee naar huis te nemen. Deze weerklonk nog lang na :-)
