Starsailor saw the light of day in the year 2000. The band's name was derived from a work by the late Tim Buckley. It is, at the same, also a homage to this exceptional performer. Starsailor's praises...

Starsailor saw the light of day in the year 2000. The band's name was derived from a work by the late Tim Buckley. It is, at the same, also a homage to this exceptional performer. Starsailor's praises were frequently sung from the start. Many consider them as the future of the new British scene. James Walsh, James Stelfox, Ben Byrne and Barry Westhead, all from the north of England, first gave a concert in April 2000. A little later they sign a contract with EMI. First album 'Love Is Here' was a bull's-eye, carried by appealing international hit singles ‘Fever’, ‘Good Souls’ and ‘Alcoholic’. Starsailor worked together with legend Phil Spector for their second album, ‘Silence is Easy’. Once again they present true gems such as ‘Silence is Easy’ and ‘Four To The Floor’. Starsailor's following steadily grew. ‘On The Outside’ (2005) sounds different. The album is a lot more personal and stands out due to its raw sound. Album 4 has been out for a few months now. Top producer Steve Osbourne worked on ‘All The Plans’ with them, a fantastic and, especially, a mature album. Walsh's elegance combined with profound, lyrical texts deliver a passionate piece of work. Single ‘Tell Me It’s Not Over’ is possibly one of the most beautiful Starsailor songs. The Englishmen would like to make a date with Belgian fans for an already magical concert on Tuesday 29 September!

Ginga requires a few listens, as their sound unites sugary-sweet violins, R&B, punk attitude, choirs and organs, simple riffs and eccentric percussion. But then this does produce a very unique sound, something that didn't go unnoticed on Belgian radio (you can hear their single ‘Fashion’ regularly) and James Walsh from Starsailor is a fan too – as he personally chose them as support act on Tuesday 29 September. Their album is only going to be released in February 2010, on new Belgian label Level 11, but you can already discover a few songs at myspace.com

Acheté sur un coup de tête, probablement à cause du prix particulièrement démocratique des places, je me suis rendu à mon 4ème concert en ce mois de septembre 2009 ! Un peu les pieds dans le plomb, il faut bien l'avouer ! Ne connaissant le groupe britannique que par son tube "4 to the floor", je ne savais pas réellement à quoi m'attendre... Et ce que j'avais entrecroisé sur youtube ne m'amenait guère à plus d'enthousiasme... Un engouement qui n'a guère cru quand je vis la salle totalement vide sur le coup de 19h45 ! A croire que le public était au courant que le set était précédé d'une première partie GINGA qui, bien qu'elle sentait un certain amateurisme, ne manquait certes pas d'intérêt. Une pop musique tantôt teintée de new wave, tantôt de sursauts à la Muse... J'ai bien écrit : sursauts ! N'allez pas dire ce que je n'ai pas écrit ! Pile à l'heure, Ben Byrne (Batterie), James ?Stel? Stelfox (Basse), Barry Westhead (synthés) et le leader, James Walsh, entraient sur scène nonchalamment ! Après un premier morceau "Tie up My Hands", les bases de ce concert étaient déjà bien installées. On ne peut pas se tromper, on se retrouve bien dans l'Angleterre profonde, berceau du pop-rock... Sauf que Starsailor, à la différence de son tube "4 to the floor" a décidé de la jouer calme, sur cd comme sur scène, mettant probablement en exergue des textes intéressants quand on prend la peine de les traduire (ce que je ne fais jamais) mais surtout en exergue la voix de James Walsh... Dans une tonalité puissante à la Brian Molko et aux accents très british de Tom Chaplin de Keane ! On fleurte avec les Killers, Coldplay ou encore Placebo à ses débuts mais, bien que ce soit très plaisant à l'écoute, le charisme du leader et la puissance de la musique n'y est pas ! Ne vous méprenez pas sur mes paroles, même si ça ne swingue pas des masses, si l'on reste dans des morceaux s'apparentant davantage à des balades pop, je dois reconnaître avoir passé une très bonne soirée tout de même. Rien que la voix du leader vaut le déplacement et la qualité technique du groupe n'est plus à mettre en cause... Mais c'est encore jeune et cela manque d'une pincée de punch ! James Walsh a cependant un bon rapport avec son public (qui je l'ai oublié est arrivé sur le coup de 20h30 pour remplir l'Ancienne Belgique), arrive aisément à nous installer dans un monde qui est le sien, arrive à mettre l'ambiance quand il en a l'occasion et est particulièrement bon quand il reprend le répertoire d'autres artistes tels que Beatles ou U2 ! Preuve qu'ils ont toutes les cartes en main pour cartonner et remplir un Flanders Expo à partir du moment où ils seront quelque peu sorti d'une sérénade qui manque de saveur ! Je ne sais pas si Starsailor est promis à une très grande carrière mais comme ma critique est totalement subjective, je vous invite à les découvrir ou les redécouvrir sur leurs 4 premiers albums : "Love Is Here", "Silence Is Easy", "On the Outside" et "All the Plans". Ils ont quand même placés dix de leurs singles dans le Top 40 de ventes de disques au Royaume-Uni ! Allez, ce ne sera pas mon concert de l'année 2009 mais pourquoi pas les revoir dans quelques années...

Ik vond het af. Enige minpuntjes waren het ontbreken van Fever en Lullaby maar de versies van Poor Misguided Fool, Silence Is Easy, Tell Me It's Not Over en Some Of Us waren echt niet volgens het boekje en hebben me echt wel ontroerd. De cover van All I Want Is You van U2 was een mooi extraatje.

Mooi concert! Het enige wat je eventueel zou kunnen opmerken, is dat het allemaal wat afgeborsteld en netjes klonk! Maar voor de rest, best ok!

Aaarrgghhh, moest ik nu echt op vakantie zijn wanneer de ticketverkoop begon... al een paar concerten van hen meegemaakt en elke keer opnieuw volledig in opgegaan. Indien één van de gelukkige ticketbezitters dus een been mocht breken, zijn muzieklievende hersenen schudden, etc en er dus niet geraken: ik koop graag je ticket over en schenk je (for free) mijn eeuwige dankbaarheid!
