7:00 pm  SOUNDTRACK BY… BL13Pdj

7:00 pm PRE-LISTENING SESSION: BIBIO ‘Title: tbc’
(Warp Records – release: eind juni)

7:00 pm VOODOO TRANCE SOUND SYSTEM
Voodoo Trance Sound System was created in assignment to the Zuiderpershuis in Antwerp, whereby drummer/percussionist/composer Eric Thielemans joined forces with two exceptional and versatile drummers. Stop! Eric who? We know Eric Thielemans from the likes of the avant garde jazz of Mâäks’s Spirit, from the collaborative project Coca Cola Met God (once opener to Battles in the AB) with Tim Vanhamel and also from his irresistible 12" ‘A Snare Is A Bell’ on Dennis Tyfus’ Ultra Eczema-label. Two versatile drummers? Yup, so it was that Eric Thielemans invited American drummer Chris Corsano (see: Björk, Evan Parker, Paul Flaherty,...) and fellow countryman Jeroen Stevens (I Love Sarah, Mauro,...) to the stage. Finally: Eric, what can we expect musically? "Belly oriented beats, ultra drones and folksy break moves." Good to have that clarified.

7:45 pm TIM EXILE
Tim Exile is the brand new acquisition of the famous Warp stables. This classically trained violin player – with a Master of Arts in electro-acoustic composition – already experimented with electronica at a young age. His first love was drum ’n' bass and that cumulated in various released on the famous Moving Shadow label (remember the likes of EZ Rollers, Dom & Roland,...). The man, who now resides in Berlin, had his debut album released via Planet Mu. Due to dissatisfaction with the limited possibilities of the usual DJ equipment, Tim Exile put together his own. The album ’Listening Tree’ is soon to appear on Warp (in collaboration with Planet Mu), it bridges the gap between dance and pop whereby echoes of The Human League are not far removed. There's no doubt that Exile likes a challenge: so it was that he recently remixed the Elbipolis Baroque Orchestra live on stage. Respect!

8:00 pm VENETIAN SNARES
Already the third visit to the AB (once live, once behind the turntables) from the man with the coolest name we know: AARON FUNK. Aaron Funk is, as ever, the alter-ego of Canadian breakcore (or do you prefer drill ’n' bass?) veteran Venetian Snares. His music sounds blatantly brutal and explosive. We'll shout a drink to anyone who knows his complete track record by heart. His releases are innumerable (at a guess: about twenty albums), just as his monikers. Remember: BeeSnares, Last Step, Puff, Senetian Vnares, Snares Man! and Ventriloquist Snakes. Our absolute Snares favourite is his ‘Hungarian’ record ‘Rossz Csillag Allat Született’ from ’05 that was released via Planet Mu, the label of Venetian Snares discoverer Mike Paradinas. On it, Mr. Funk experimented with classical Hungarian music from the likes of Béla Bartók. A successful recipe that was followed up on ‘My Downfall’. Funk says of his rather massive output: "I really don't do much else. I'm not interested in golfing or knitting... and most of the time it's too fucking cold to leave the house." We completely can't keep up with the releases on smaller labels like Hyme, Sublight Records or Kriss anymore, but even so we're very curious about his 10" ‘Sabbath Dubs’ from ’07 (on Kriss) with dubstep versions of - indeed - Black Sabbath.

10:30 pm SQUAREPUSHER
Is this the same Squarepusher that Domino has been trying to get hold of for 13 editions already?? You bet it is! The generally reclusive Tom Jenkinson made a 90° turn last year: he suddenly became relatively communicative, started touring intensively and, what's more, he turned up at his own shows! His overwhelming appearance at All Tomorrow’s Parties (where Mike Patton and The Melvins served as curators) certainly won't be forgotten in a hurry. Live drum ‘n' bass - with Jenkinson on bass of course – that often equaled the power of metal without renouncing his jazz background (Jaco Pastorius!), all this supplemented by impressive visuals. Squarepusher hereby proved again that he's still among the world's best electronica performers. ‘Just A Souvenir’ - now his twelfth album – was released via his permanent homebase Warp, that this year also happens to celebrate its 20 year existence. Who'd have thought that Squarepusher, who we've been following here since his debut ‘Feed Me Weird Things’ (from ’96, then picked up by Aphex Twin's Rephlex label), would become such an ongoing and influential player. Squarepusher came the closest to 'a hit' with ‘My Red Hot Car’ (yup, the real title was indeed ‘My Red Hot Cock’) and his version of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apart’. Squarepusher in the AB? 100%! Now Autechre...
