DOMINO: RAIN MACHINE feat. KYP MALONE (Tv On The Radio) + FOOL’S GOLD + THE STRANGE BOYS

Kelpe has cancelled his concert in the Domino festival.

09:30 pm - Rain Machine feat. Kyp Malone (TV On The Radio) (us)

Rain Machine is none less than TV ON THE RADIO’s guitarist/singer Kyp Malone. He took care of every detail of his untitled debut - released end ’09 via Anti- (see also: Tom Waits, Grinderman, The Swell Season,…) - himself, or better said: from songs to artwork. Malone even described his solo-debut cryptically as “a nearly full spectrum of frequencies audible to the human ear, some rhythm some rhyme.” . Other media were more concrete. NME: “Malone's Rain Machine surpasses his day job for sheer inventiveness… It's undoubtedly one of the most wildly inventive and entertaining things anyone will hear all year.” USA Today is a fan too: “Malone steps out with an emotionally open debut just as experimental and daring as his work with TVOTR.”. Just listen to the track ‘Give Blood’ and let yourself be convinced. Just as The Pixies became fans and took Rain Machine on their North American tour.

7:00 pm - The Strange Boys
Texan garage rockers, verging on a breakthrough. Definitely now – following their debuut ‘And Girls Club’, on In The Red Records – their second album ‘Be Brave’ is being released by the famous Rough Trade international. Singer and songwriter Ryan Sambol has a whopping pinched voice-box, which immediately makes his singing considerably emotional. All that in a musical mood that reminds one of the famous 13th Floor Elevators or - even better – of the sublime ‘Nuggets’ compilation with impressive garage rock singles dating from the second half of the 60's. Think: The Seeds, Count Five and The Knickerbockers… The Strange Boys have already opened for Daniel Johnston, Julian Casablancas and Black Lips, who don't all just happen to be performers with a considerably retro or ramshackle sound. Finally Goddeau about The Strange Boys: “Het is alsof u naar een garageversie van The Libertines of Babyshambles luistert.”.

8:00 pm - Fool’s Gold
“The first great record of 2010.” (Rough Trade Shop)
“A band to watch in 2010.”
(The Guardian)

Fool’s Gold is a 7 to 12-member collective from LA, based around guitarist Lewis Pesacov (who has a predilection for African music) and the Israeli-born singer/bassist Luke Tops (who more often sings in Hebrew than in English). The band is further completed by saxophonists, percussionists and (ex-)members of diverse bands including We Are Scientists and The Fall. Their performances are a charming trip into a unique mix of afro-pop, krautrock and even 80's dance-pop. Their self-titled debut has already been out since ‘09, but has only been introduced on the continent this year. The Guardian wrote of it: “The result is a brilliant, euphoric, universally transcendent amalgam of global sounds.” Or BBC Music too: “Much like Fela Kuti’s reinvention of American funk as afrobeat, or Tinariwen’s Led Zeppelin-influenced desert blues, Fool’s Gold stretch Western pop templates out into African shapes; and this debut album belies their name by being a genuine gem.”  Now for the first time in Belgium
