Review

Mr Bloom was in perfect groove

As a quick Google of his name will confirm, Luka Bloom is something of a cult figure in the Irish folk-rock world – no that’s a good thing, honestly. Admittedly something of an LB greenhorn, I was relieved that, despite the uniform black top and combats, Mr Bloom immediately dispelled any notion that this might somehow herald a recession-era gloomfest as he gestured towards a vase of flowers taking pride of place onstage and announced: “We’re here to listen to music and to feel good, for God’s sake” (perhaps with one or two additional expletives thrown in, imaginations may be used at will). Luka Bloom & band = 'already extremely unique solo' Luka Bloom +  Dave Hingerty (drums, see also The Frames) + Joe Csibi (bass, and see also the string parts on the Luka's latest CD). Our favourite Irishman has indeed released a new CD: 'Eleven Songs', his twelfth album already, again on his own Big Sky Records (here via V2). Autumn 2008 he toured solo for sold-out halls here in Belgium. In between he also performed 'with band' in Vicar Street, Dublin. Now that unique concert can be experienced exclusively in the AB, for his, deservedly, countless fans. For the Luka-layman we'll just quickly recap: 'turbo-troubadour', real name Barry Moore (so the brother of Christy) and this passionate singer-songwriter has been active for more than a quarter century now. His career really got started with the album 'Riverside' from '90. There was that immensely successful, toned-down version of the rap-hit 'I Need Love'. Those who have already (many times) experienced a Luka Bloom performance, or know the live-CD 'Amsterdam', they know how inventive and fierce he can be live. That's it for the pep-talk, let Luka Bloom convince you himself!

And an extra wee blurb from Luka himself for march 4th:

After nearly 20 years coming to Belgium with just my voice and guitars and songs; I've decided it's time to bring some friends to play with me.
We had so much fun making Eleven Songs, my new record, that I've asked some of the guys to come to Ancienne Belgique in Brussels for a show on March 4th 2009.
Joe Csibi has played bass with Sting, The Chieftains, Elmer Bernstein; has worked with Riverdance... More importantly, he played bass and arranged strings on Between the Mountain and the Moon for me in 2001. He'll be playing double bass on March 4th.
And Dave Hingerty has been the drummer for The Frames, as well as Josh Ritter; and he did a great job on Eleven Songs for me.
We had a great night together in Dublin recently in Vicar Street, and can't wait to do this special gig in AB on March 4th.
See you there, Luka Bloom.

Heb Luka Bloom al vaak zien optreden en kan je vertellen: hij is een singer-songwriter pur-sang! Ooit in België al een zaal horen uit volle borst horen meezingen? Garanti de sfeer die je krijgt die concertavond! Love love love it!

Ik heb zijn vorige concert in België (Vooruit Gent) gemist en deze kans wil ik niet voorbij laten gaan. Nu trouwens met 2 extra muzikanten erbij! I'll be there.
