Machine Music, part I’ till ‘Metal Machine Music, part IV’) consisting of pure noise, distortion, drones and feedback that were each, exactly, 16 minutes and 1 second in length. All recorded on a 4-track in his apartment in New York. It was also released just after his successful albums ‘Transformer’ (’72), ‘Berlin’ (‘73) and ‘Sally Can’t Dance’ (’74). Reed cited his influences as being the work of minimalist La Monte Young’s Theater of Eternal Music , which included amongst its members the likes of John Cale and Tony Conrad. Avant garde composers Iannis Xenakis and Karlheinz Stockhausen were also mentioned. In the liner notes, Lou Reed noted: “Most of you won’t like this, and I don’t blame you at all.” He proved to be right too…
