Things are going well, sorry, very well for Emiliana Torrini. Her latest album 'Me And Armini' was – more than rightly so – heaped with highly commending reviews. Moreover, she played at Rock Werchter this summer, she's adorned the number one spot in the Flemish Ultratop with ‘Jungle Drum’ and she's scored a pure hat-trick in the AB by concerting on our stage three times in just one year. All that within a healthy growth curve: from the intimate ABClub to the ABFlex to the AB's main hall .
Icelandic resident of England, Emiliana Torrini already stole our heart with her Rough Trade debut 'Fisherman's Woman'. Apparently not only our heart either. Quite a while ago she won 3 awards in Iceland for 'Female Singer of the Year', 'Pop Album of the Year' and 'Video of the Year' (with that incredibly cute clip for her single 'Sunny Road'). Her whispered, intimate songs charm live too. Just recall her remarkable recent visit to the AB ("Wow it’s my stadium tour!") including funny patter between songs.
She debuted in '99 with the triphoppy 'Love In The Time Of Science' (with Tears For Fears-man Roland Orzabal behind the dials). These day her world lies closer to that of Nick Drake or Feist rather than, say, Portishead. Also worth mentioning: Torrini wrote 'Gollum's Song' for Lord Of The Rings – at the request of director Peter Jackson himself -, could already be heard in the TV series 'Grey's Anatomy', wrote for (and toured with) Thievery Corporation, an actually provided Kylie Minogue with a number one hit by writing 'Slow' for her.
Won't you just stay and live here, dear Emiliana?

Opener will be Lay Low from Iceland. Emiliana would seem to be a fan of the lady, as she also took her on tour through Europe this spring. Lay Low is, as always, the alter-ego of Lovísa Elísabet Sigrúnardóttir and she sounds extremely credible as Icelandic blues-chanteuse... Or rather: like fellow countryman Mugison often also knows how to get his teeth into blues and country. Her latest album 'Farewell Good Night's Sleep' was produced by Liam Watson (see: White Stripes and Supergrass).

Puik concert. Een wereld van verschil met het pukkelpopclub optreden, dat ik zag, van enkele jaren terug. Toen durfde ze nauwelijk te bewegen, laat staan het publiek recht in de ogen te kijken. Torrini is ontbolsterd tot een kwieke dame met veel gevoel voor humor.
