Sonic Youth is an influential experimental rock band which formed in New York City, New York, United States in 1981. The current lineup consists of Thurston Moore (vocals, guitar), Kim Gordon (vocals, bass, guitar), Lee Ranaldo (vocals and guitar), Steve Shelley (drums) and Mark Ibold (bass). In their early career, Sonic Youth was associated with the No Wave art and music scene in New York City.

Ai, zou onderstaand Pitchfork bericht het einde van de groep kunnen betekenen? Laat ons hopen van niet. Sonic Youth's Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore have separated. The First Couple of indie rock had been married since 1984; they have a 17-year-old daughter, Coco. A statement from Matador Records says, "Sonic Youth, with both Kim and Thurston involved, will proceed with its South American tour dates in November. Plans beyond that tour are uncertain. The couple has requested respect for their personal privacy and does not wish to issue further comment."
