Black Radio. Kendrick Lamar. Jazz for the new millennium.
Just like Thundercat and Kamasi Washington, he was to be heard on the future classic ‘To Pimp A Butterfly’ by rap-god Kendrick Lamar. He impressed in’15 with the album ‘Covered’, by his acoustic band The Robert Glasper Trio: the place where he gives rein to his passion for piano and reworks songs by Radiohead, Joni Mitchell, John Legend and – the circle is complete – Kendrick Lamar into jazz versions. So it is with pride that we announce that multi-Grammy winner, jazz pianist and R&B producer Robert Glasper is coming to AB for the first time!
Not with his trio, but with the mothership Robert Glasper Experiment that became famous with his album ‘Black Radio’ on the legendary Blue Note Records. He worked together with greats like Norah Jones, Jill Scott, Emeli Sandé and Snoop Dogg on that album, which reveals an enormous amount respect from within the scene. With his ‘Experiment’, he presents amiable neo-soul: throwing the classic jazz rules overboard and draping the music over a dusty hip-hop beat. It immediately reminds one of the style of D’Angelo and José James and so Robert Glasper really would seem to be one of the soul jazz stars of the 21st century.
