“James and company refuse to play it safe, making ‘While You Were Sleeping’ one of the most interesting pop albums of the year so far.” (Downbeat)
Wham! Bam! Those who have heard the brand-new single – ‘Every Little Thing’ – by young jazz-god José James must surely have choked on their coffee. A burly sound and hard guitars make their entrance. Yet, we could have seen this coming. In terms of projects, and at the request of AB, José James smoothly worked his way through the legacy of Billie Holiday (‘Yesterday, I had the Blues’) and John Coltrane (‘Facing East’). He also appeared at the side of Jef Neve and as special guest to John Coltrane associate McCoy Tyner. At the same time, he was collaborating with the Brainfeeder family on the other side of the musical horizon, the likes of Flying Lotus and Taylor McFerrin. The path on this latest album is not one he's taken before.
