Alan Lomax (1915-2002) spent more than 60 years of his life recording and distributing folk music. From the summer of 1954 until January 1955 he travelled through Italy together with his Italian colleague Diego Carpitella. Last year a fantastic photo book about this journey was published, L'anno più felice della mia vita (The Happiest Year of My Life) by Goffredo Plastino.

In connection with the tribute to Alan Lomax organised by Ancienne Belgique in September and October 2009, the MIM presents a photography exhibition together with AB. A powerful selection of images from the book give an insight into the use of authentic Italian instruments and the life's work of the late Alan Lomax. A number of concerts will take place during the exhibition and also a reading by Goffredo Plastino. Moreover, the Musical Instrument Museum will provide a special route along a number of typical Italian instruments that are present in the museum.
